Thing 15

Welcome to my fourth post! This post is about video chat and webinars, Thing 15 of the SSSC 23 Things Challenge.

It seemed very apt to do thing 15 at the moment, with many people now using video chat as a way of talking to family and friends. I, personally, have been using Zoom and Facetime as a platform for this, as well as for all the mandatory pub quizzes!

My experiences with Zoom and Facetime have been good, although delays in picture and sound do sometimes occur when lots of people are in the video chat. The benefits of using video chat are:

·      You can see the other people

·      You can have a conversation in real time

·      You can talk to multiple to people at once

However, you do need a microphone and web camera, or laptop/mobile with these already integrated. You will also need a good Wi-Fi connection or mobile data network. I find it beneficial to wear headphones, so any noise from your speakers does not turn into feedback for others. Using the mute function when you’re not speaking, will also reduce background noise and enable the speaker to be heard more clearly.

I hadn’t heard of Google Hangout before now but did download it to my phone. It seems to be very similar to other text and video chat platforms, although it is less popular and well-known. I’ve also used Skype in the past, mainly for work-related interviews and feedback sessions. However, when using video chat for work, you need to be careful that no confidential information is discussed as the network may not be secure and could be accessed by unwanted people. To manage this risk, you should ensure the platform you are using is encrypted.

I’ve also attended a few webinars before – these are presentations given over the web in real time. The benefit to this is that you can ask the speaker questions, either by text or audio, not possible of course, if you were just watching a recorded video. Webinars are useful when you can’t go to the lecture in person or want to undertake independent learning.

L
